People lie more than they tell the truth, and half the time they don’t even realise they’re doing it. Some lie because they’re scared, some lie because they’re hiding something, and some lie because they’ve done it for so long it’s basically their personality now. You can always tell when someone lies — not because they’re good at it, but because the story never sits right. Something feels off. Something doesn’t match. Something in your gut goes, yeah, that’s not real.
The thing about liars is they always think they’re smarter than everyone else. They think you won’t notice. They think you won’t connect the dots. They think you’re too distracted, too trusting, too soft, too whatever. But you always notice. Maybe not straight away, but eventually the truth shows itself. It always does. Lies don’t age well. They crack. They slip. They expose the person who told them.
When you finally see the lie clearly, you also see the person differently. You see how they avoid things. How they twist things. How they change details depending on who they’re talking to. How they act innocent when they’re caught. How they pretend they “didn’t mean it” or “didn’t think it mattered.” It always matters. A lie is never small. It’s a choice someone made because they didn’t respect you enough to give you the truth.
The worst part is how liars flip it back on you. They act like you’re overreacting. They act confused. They act offended. They act like you’re the problem for noticing what they tried to hide. That’s the part that gets me — the performance. The fake shock. The “I don’t know why you’re upset.” They know exactly why. They just don’t want to deal with it.
Once someone lies, something changes. You don’t look at them the same. You don’t trust their words the same. You don’t feel the same. Even if you move on, even if you forgive them, even if you try to keep things normal — it’s not normal anymore. You’re different. They’re different. The whole thing is different.
Lies don’t just break trust. They break the version of the person you thought you were dealing with. And once that version is gone, it doesn’t come back.
